Main Street Calumet Window Display Contest Winners

Main Street Calumet’s Design Committee is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 Summer window Display contest:

1st place: Curves for Women 205 Fifth Street
Business feature ad in the Daily Mining Gazette ($650 value)

2nd Place: Red Jacket General Store 412 Fifth Street
Calumet Theatre 2009 Season Ticket ($215 value)

3rd Place: Calumet Mecantile 107 Fifth Street
Night’s stay at AmericInn, Calumet ($135 value)

This summer’s display window theme is Keweenaw Music Traditions and aims to celebrate the roll music plays in our community life. Downtown businesses were invited to create a storefront window display that highlights an aspect of the Keweenaw’s musical heritage while incorporating goods or services offered for sale.

In Calumet’s Historic downtown district, we are fortunate to be surrounded by music: live music and open mic. nights featured at bars and cafés; prominent performers on the stage at the Calumet Theatre; piano lessons in the front parlor of the Norwegian Lutheran Church parsonage and this summer, a concert series at the Keweenaw Heritage Center at St. Anne’s.

Fourteen merchants participated in the window display contest.
Windows were judged on the following characteristics:

Connection to Theme (Keweenaw Music Traditions)
Originality and Creativity
Use of Space
Cleanliness of Displays and Windows

The windows were judged by a panel of Michigan Main Street Managers and volunteers from all over the state attending the Michigan Main Street Quarterly Conference held in downtown Calumet on June 16-17, 2009.

Auditions for Calumet Radio/Theatre Show Being Held July 15

Auditions for Calumet Radio/Theatre Show Being Held July 15, 2009

Calumet, MI—Auditions for “Red Metal Radio Show” will be held Wednesday, July 15, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., at the Merchants & Miners Building, 200 Fifth Street in downtown Calumet. The Merchants & Miners Building is located at the intersection of Fifth & Portland Streets. Use either the 4th or 5th Street entrances.

The Main Street Calumet live radio-theatre production, hosted by present-day narrator/host Oren Tikkanen, is a local history variety show loosely based on Garrison Keillor's “Prairie Home Companion”. Show date is Thursday, August 13, 2009 starting sharp at 7:00 p.m. at the Calumet Theatre and aired LIVE on Eagle Radio!! Dress rehearsal will be Wednesday, August 12 with other rehearsal dates to be announced.

Show is based on talking with people in Calumet (Red Jacket) 100 years ago, including various ethnic groups of that time (so it will be helpful if you could recreate the speech/dialects of that time – for example, Slovenian, Italian, Ojibwe, Irish, Cornish, Finnish ...).

Spoken vignettes/stories will alternate with ethnic music by regional musicians.

This program is part of Main Street Calumet's Calumet Heritage Celebration. Main Street Calumet is sponsoring the Red Metal Radio Show, in conjunction with the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Eagle Radio is a media partner. This activity is supported by the Copper Country Community Arts Council and is a program of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. Community supporters include the KNHP Archives, the Finlandia Archives, and Range Bank.

To find out more information about how to participate in this fun local history project or how to add your organization to the list of community supporters, please call Darlene at 337-5243 or e-mail at dkbasto@up.net and leave a voice mail or email message (please leave the best time/s and what phone number or e-mail address where you can be reached).
