Hi Tom,
My name is Susan Wilson--I live in Troy, MI. I was looking around online for Calumet and Laurium information and came across your blog. This coming Friday (June 26) my 3 brothers and my sister are all arriving in Laurium from different states (MA, VA and NM) to attend the Pasty Fest. Our dad was born (1921) and raised in Calumet and our mom was born (1922) and raised in Laurium. Both are deceased. We recently came across several boxes filled with old photographs, diaries (my deceased aunt's--she lived on 8th Street--daily diaries from 1948 thru the mid-70's), documents, etc. Finding all that historical family stuff made us decide to have a reunion up there to check out our roots. My brother and I actually were born in Calumet. A couple of years ago he and I went to Calumet and visited the cemetery where our relatives are all buried and checked out the home and business addresses of our parents, etc. We found those addresses when we were in a little store in Calumet where the owner had tons of Polk directories from the 20's, etc. Would you happen to know what store we were in? We will need to go back there to check it all out again. Anyhow, I was wondering if you had any helpful hints for us. If so, is there anyway that we could email or talk either before we come up or while we are up there? I figured that you must be very knowledgeable about the area and really care about it to have a blog about it! My email address is callie2393@aol.com and my phone number is (248) 637-0059. We are all very excited about this trip. When my brother and I were up there the last time it was very emotional for us--which was quite surprising. I want my other 2 brothers and my sister to have that sort of experience--they haven't been up there in 40 years. Thanks for any help you can give us! Susan
